Derived from the Gaydon coupe, the DB9 Volante brings the Aston Martin grand-touring idea into a large, powerful and very elegant convertible. The naturally aspirated `V12` matters enormously here: more than a stopwatch car, it offers a distinctive way of covering ground quickly, with the sound and response of a noble engine without turbocharging. Next to a Porsche 911 Cabriolet, it gives away agility but answers with more presence and much stronger low-rev character.

The Volante keeps the DB9's personality while asking for more attention to structure, roof and seals. The early years are very appealing, with a real sense of luxury and an Aston that still feels fairly mechanical in its approach. The downside is that weight, V12 heat and comfort electronics all demand disciplined upkeep, because a high-end convertible ages worse than a coupe when it spends too much time unused.
