Launched in `2002`, the Bentley `Arnage R` puts the emphasis on grand touring more than on the harder edge of the `Arnage T`. It keeps Crewe's monumental `6.75 turbo V8`, here in a softer and more hushed tune, and suits buyers who want a very traditional Bentley able to cover long distances in an atmosphere of heavy calm. Its world is much closer to a hand-built limousine than to a simple British alternative to a BMW 7 Series.

In this `2002-2005` phase, the `Arnage R` benefits from a shell further stiffened over the earliest Arnage cars, a revised chassis and a presentation clearly tuned for comfort. The `6.75` delivers one continuous wave of torque, and the GM automatic gearbox should always feel like it handles the whole package without effort. A good `Arnage R` should not feel dramatic; it should feel dense, stable and fully under control despite weighing more than `2.5 tonnes`.
