The first CTS for model year 2003 marks the moment Cadillac stops playing purely on American comfort. The Sigma platform, rear-wheel drive, angular styling and a more serious driving position all signal a genuine attempt to re-enter the contest against European saloons. In ambition it reaches for a BMW 5 Series rather than a mainstream tourer, even if its presentation stays unmistakably Cadillac.
Early cars use the 3.2 V6, before the 2.8 and 3.6 HFV6 arrive. The real signal car remains the CTS-V, first with the LS6 5.7-litre and later the LS2 6.0-litre with a Tremec manual gearbox. This first CTS operates on two levels: a rear-wheel-drive saloon rare in the GM catalogue of its era, and a serious base for a V that could already trade image with German performance saloons. In return, the HFV6 timing chain, the 5L40-E automatic and rear axle condition matter enormously.
