The 1997 facelift did not turn the 145 into a sensible hatchback. It simply made it more complete, with a broader range and a slightly more polished presentation. It still relies on sharp steering, an unusual driving position and engines that matter more than trim quality.
Between `1997` and `1999`, the key cars are the `1.4`, `1.6`, `1.8` and `2.0 Twin Spark`, while the `1.9 TD` is simpler but much less exciting. On petrol versions, the real buying filter is timing-belt history, oil discipline, phase variator condition and clean ignition behavior, not just the sound of the engine.
