The facelifted `1997-2001` phase of the Audi Cabriolet `8G` is the most complete version of the model, with a slightly more modern presentation and a better-structured range. Against a BMW 3 Series Cabriolet, it remains the calmer, less playful alternative, made for clean open-top cruising rather than hard driving. On the used market, this phase is attractive because it is more mature, not because it suddenly became simple or fault-free.
The line-up mixes the `1.8 20V`, `2.6 V6`, `2.8 V6`, `1.9 TDI 90` `1Z` and a few automatic gearboxes on the more relaxed versions. Engine choice changes the whole character of the car: the `1.8` is the sensible option, the `V6` versions suit the grand-touring brief better, and the `1.9 TDI` appeals to buyers wanting calm, economical mileage. In every case, the hood, weather sealing and front-axle history matter at least as much as the mechanical file.
