The `Audi R8 Spyder 42`, launched in `2010`, turns the first `R8` into an open car built first around the naturally aspirated `5.2 FSI V10` and the driving experience rather than versatility. Against a same-era Porsche 911 Cabriolet or Targa, it offers real mechanical character, but also high running costs and genuine concerns around the roof, water sealing and cooling that must be taken seriously.
In this pre-facelift phase, the market is mostly centred on the `5.2 FSI V10 quattro` with the `R tronic` automated gearbox. That shapes much of the used-car judgement: imperfect low-speed smoothness, an expensive clutch, behaviour that varies with calibration and service quality, plus the usual `V10` concerns around ignition, heat management, radiators and ancillaries. On top of that come the soft top, seals, side windows, the stiffness of an open shell and the ageing of the rear opening panels.
