From `2004` to `2008`, the `S4 B7` brings the compact Audi `V8` idea to its most polished phase before later generations changed direction completely. Against a BMW 3 Series, it still relies on the naturally aspirated `4.2`, `quattro` and a relatively discreet look, but as a package it feels more mature than the `B6`. Used, that can be very appealing if you do not mistake sound and presentation for proven condition.
The core remains the `4.2 V8 BBK`, with either a `6-speed` manual or `tiptronic` depending on the car. As on the `B6`, the rear timing chains, cold-start noise, oil consumption, cooling, ignition and ancillaries all need a realistic read. The `B7` is often sold on image and noise, so a smart presentation should never blind you to the technical truth.
