From `1997` to `2001`, the `S4 Avant B5` pushes the sleeper idea even further than the saloon. Against a BMW 3 Series, it combines real estate-car space, `quattro`, a `V6 biturbo` and the ability to cover ground very quickly without ever looking showy. On the used market it attracts both old Audi enthusiasts and buyers wanting a practical car with character, but that mix is exactly why selection has to stay severe.

Under the bonnet sits the `2.7 V6 biturbo` in `AGB` or `AZB` form, usually with a `6-speed` manual and sometimes `tiptronic` depending on market. As on the saloon, you need a serious read of the `K03` turbos, the cooling system, the small hoses, vacuum lines, ignition health and oil-change quality. On the Avant, you also need to look at how it was really used: loading marks, boot condition, tailgate sealing, rear-end fatigue and whether a car that mixed family life and hard driving still feels coherent.
