📖BMW 8 Series Coupé G15: modern prestige grand tourer demanding disciplined cooling and tyre upkeep

BMW 8 Series Coupé (G15) (2018-2022)

Launched in 2018, the BMW 8 Series Coupé G15 revived Munich's prestige grand coupé badge with dramatic styling, a wide stance and a luxuriously appointed 2+2 cabin. Positioned above the 5 Series and 6 Series, it combined high-speed continent-crossing pace with genuine sports-car poise. Preserving this high-calibre grand tourer requires proactive BMW 8 Series maintenance, paying close attention to powertrain cooling, tyre management and electronic systems.

The launch powertrain portfolio offered the 840d xDrive powered by the twin-turbo B57 straight-six diesel, the rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive 840i with the B58 petrol, and the blistering M850i xDrive powered by the 530 hp N63B44T3 V8. Power was managed exclusively by the seamless ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. The chassis features standard adaptive dampers, active rear-wheel steering and rear-biased xDrive, making it exceptionally nimble despite its two-tonne mass.

Owner notes

The reassuring points, known weak spots and deadlines you should not let slip.

Reassuring points

Reliability
  • Dramatic, low-slung coupé silhouette with outstanding high-speed stability and acoustic refinement.
  • The 840i B58 delivers the ideal balance of straight-six smoothness, agility and predictable ownership costs.
  • Silky ZF 8-speed gearbox and rear-biased xDrive provide tenacious all-weather traction.

Chronic weak spots

Keep an eye on
  • B57 diesel (840d): monitor EGR cooler recall status, DPF differential pressure and ensure regular motorway runs.
  • B58 petrol (840i): inspect coolant level in primary and secondary circuits and check oil filter housing.
  • M850i N63 V8: inspect hot-vee turbo coolant lines, engine oil consumption and auxiliary cooling fans.
  • ZF 8-speed transmission and xDrive: inspect transfer case fluid and ensure matching tyre circumferences.
  • Suspension and tyres: large M Sport wheels and aggressive camber cause rapid inner shoulder tyre wear.

Critical deadlines

Do not miss
  • Engine oil and filter change: renew every 10,000 to 15,000 km or 12 months with BMW Longlife-approved oil.
  • ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox service: renew fluid and integrated pan filter every 80,000 to 100,000 km.
  • Brake fluid renewal: flush and replace hydraulic fluid every 24 months regardless of mileage.
  • Wheel alignment and tyre check: inspect geometry every 30,000 km to prevent premature tyre replacement.
