The BMW Z3 M Roadster transformed Munich's compact drop-top into a ferocious performance roadster. Armed with a quad-tailpipe exhaust system, deep front spoiler, wide rear track and full BMW M Division running gear, it delivered unfiltered supercar pace in a compact convertible format. Enjoying this open-top icon requires disciplined BMW Z3 maintenance, approaching it with the mechanical diligence an authentic M motor demands.
Power comes from the magnificent 3.2-litre S50B32 straight-six (later upgraded to the S54), boasting individual throttle butterflies, mechanical bucket tappets and high-pressure dual VANOS. Mated to a heavy-duty 5-speed ZF manual gearbox and limited-slip differential, power delivery is sensational. However, the high engine output places immense stress on the boot floor spot welds, differential mounting bracket and rear semi-trailing arms.
