📖BMW Z4 G29: return to lightweight fabric soft-top demanding disciplined B58 thermal and driveline care

BMW Z4 G29 (2018-2026)

Launched in 2018, the third-generation BMW Z4 G29 returned to a lightweight fabric soft top, shedding 50 kg over the old hardtop and lowering the centre of gravity. Co-developed on a shared sports car platform alongside the Toyota GR Supra, it restored sharp, agile roadster dynamics with modern CLAR chassis rigidity. Looking after this modern sports roadster requires regular BMW Z4 maintenance, targeting turbo cooling circuits, digital systems and gearbox servicing.

Engine choices feature the punchy 2.0-litre B48 four-cylinder (20i, 30i) and the sensational 3.0-litre B58 straight-six (M40i) pumping out 340 hp. Every variant pairs with the benchmark ZF 8-speed sport automatic transmission, with the M40i gaining an electronically controlled M Sport differential. The electric fabric roof folds in just 10 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph.

Reassuring points

Reliability
  • Return to a lightweight compact fabric roof that operates in 10 seconds and lowers centre of gravity.
  • Benchmark B58 straight-six engine delivering explosive mid-range punch, silky revs and durability.

  • M Sport electronic differential: verify silent operation without chatter during tight low-speed turns.
  • 12V AGM battery and electrical consumers: maintain battery health to avoid intermittent digital display errors.
  • Fabric soft top fabric and rear seals: inspect drain channels and ensure fabric is treated against mildew.

Critical deadlines

  • Brake fluid renewal: flush hydraulic fluid every 24 months to preserve electronic brake booster calibration.
  • Transmission and M differential service: change ZF gearbox and electronic rear differential oils at 80,000 km.
  • Cabin microfilter replacement: change dual pollen and odour filters every 20,000 km or 12 months.
