Entering the European and UK commercial vehicle markets in late 1998, the first-generation Ranger Double Cab was co-developed alongside the Mazda B-Series (UN platform) as a robust, no-nonsense four-door pickup. Offering seating for five alongside practical load-bed utility, structured Ford Ranger maintenance is fundamental to preserving its heavy-duty mechanicals from years of hard site labour. Squaring up directly against the legendary Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi L200 and Isuzu TF, it prioritised pure mechanical durability and ease of field repair over motorway refinement.
Under the steel bodywork sits a stout ladder-frame chassis carrying independent double-wishbone front torsion bar suspension and rear leaf spring suspension and U-bolts. Power is supplied by Mazda’s durable 2.5-litre indirect injection turbo-diesel (WLT), developing 109 hp and driven by a replaceable cambelt. Off-road capability is delivered through a robust five-speed manual gearbox and a four-wheel drive transfer box with selectable low range and vacuum-operated front free-wheeling hubs (RFW), ensuring unstoppability across muddy farms and forest tracks.
