The first Escalade was built in haste to get Cadillac into the luxury SUV market. Very close to the GMC Yukon Denali in its conception, it relies on a simple recipe: massive format, 5.7 Vortec V8 and robust all-wheel drive. Its real rival of the era was the Lincoln Navigator, not a European sporting SUV. This first phase reads more as a large 4x4 dressed up as a Cadillac than as a premium SUV in the modern sense.

This generation appeals mainly through its image and its mechanical simplicity. The L31 V8 is well understood, torquey at low revs and easier to read than later Escalades, but the Escalade I remains a heavy vehicle that puts running gear, brakes, the 4L60-E and axles under constant demand. On a car over twenty years old, the difference between a sound and a tired example is immediately felt - notably in steering precision, drivetrain vibration and the way the chassis handles large compressions.
