With the fourth generation, the Escalade takes a real step forward in perceived quality, sound insulation and sophistication. The interior atmosphere becomes more modern, the fit and finish improves and Cadillac commits more openly than ever to a true large luxury SUV positioning. Its most logical competitor remains the Lincoln Navigator, facing an Escalade that is more status-oriented and more demonstrative. This is the generation where the model genuinely stops living on image alone.

The 6.2 V8 L86 does everything expected of it, but it demands real attention on the GM gearbox, the Active Fuel Management system and the adaptive suspension. It is not a mechanically difficult package to understand, but it is a heavy, powerful and expensive one to bring back to standard when maintenance has been deferred. The on-board electronics and CUE touchscreen also enter the equation more significantly on this far more technology-laden generation.
