With the `2008` facelift, the `S3 8P` gained the most polished presentation of its generation and became, for many buyers, the right balance of performance, versatility and desirability. Against a compact BMW 3 Series from the same era, it stays less theatrical but very effective and easier to live with every day. Used, this is understandably the phase many people want, and also the one most often modified or treated as ordinary.
The heart of the matter revolves around the `2.0 TFSI` `BHZ` and `CDLA`, available with a manual gearbox or `S tronic`, always with `Haldex`-type all-wheel drive. This is the phase where you need to read the turbo, high-pressure fuel pump, lubrication quality, dual-clutch gearbox when fitted and the consistency of all four tyres very closely. A well-kept `S3 8P facelift` remains very convincing; a remapped car with no file gets expensive fast.
