The Cuore L501 embodies classic 1990s Japanese kei-car engineering adapted for export: a featherweight 640 kg kerb weight, razor-sharp turning radius and pure mechanical simplicity. Surviving examples are now rare, and keeping one in top condition calls for methodical Daihatsu Cuore maintenance, focusing on vintage ignition components, timing drive integrity and vigilant corrosion prevention.
Under the tiny bonnet sits an 847 cc three-cylinder engine (ED-20) producing around 42 to 44 hp, linked to a five-speed manual or a compact automatic gearbox. The engine relies on an external rubber cambelt that requires scheduled replacement alongside the water pump. In wet climate conditions, the ignition distributor and HT leads frequently suffer from moisture tracking, resulting in difficult cold starting, misfires and uneven running under acceleration.
