Introduced in 2006, the BMW M6 Convertible E64 encapsulated peak atmospheric excess by dropping BMW Motorsport’s 5.0-litre S85 V10 engine into a grand touring convertible. Developing 507 hp at 7,750 rpm with an 8,250 rpm redline, it produced an exotic, high-pitched soundtrack unmatched by any modern rival. Keeping an E64 M6 roadworthy requires rigorous, specialist BMW M6 maintenance, as neglect quickly leads to catastrophic mechanical repair bills.
The S85 engine requires disciplined preventative maintenance: the rod bearings must be replaced around 80,000 km to prevent catastrophic crankshaft failure. The high-pressure VANOS pump (running up to 80 bar) and internal high-pressure line must be inspected for pressure drop. Power is channelled exclusively through the seven-speed SMG III automated manual transmission, whose hydraulic pump, clutch release bearing, and PLCD sensor require dedicated upkeep.
