Introduced in late 1998, the facelifted BMW 7 Series Saloon E38 refined the legendary flagship with scalloped headlamp contours, standard curtain airbags, dynamic stability control (DSC III) and updated electronics. Under the bonnet, V8 models adopted single VANOS on the M62TU engine (735i, 740i), adding low-end pulling power. However, aged VANOS seals cause diesel-like idle rattling, and the plastic U-shaped centre timing chain guide remains vulnerable to brittleness and failure around 200,000 km. The plastic coolant expansion tank and water pump in the cooling system require preventative replacement to safeguard the aluminium block.
