Unveiled in 2001 alongside the E65 saloon, the long-wheelbase BMW 7 Series Long E66 extended the wheelbase by 14 cm to create an avant-garde luxury flagship. With its revolutionary Chris Bangle exterior design, steering-column gear selector and first-generation iDrive rotary controller, it represented a clean break with traditional BMW styling. The initial mechanical lineup comprised the N62 V8 engines (735Li, 745Li), the 730Ld featuring the M57 turbodiesel, and the towering 6.0-litre direct-injection N73 V12 in the 760Li. All models featured the world-first six-speed ZF 6HP automatic gearbox. The chassis integrated electronic damper control and Dynamic Drive active anti-roll bars, alongside rear pneumatic air suspension designed to maintain ride height under heavy passenger loads.
